Huh?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Photogrammetry is the fastest and most accessible method to create three-dimensional digital twins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In short, hundreds or thousands of photos are taken of an object or a scene, which are then converted into a 3D object using software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result is then, for example, like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-sketchfab wp-block-embed-sketchfab\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"sketchfab-embed-wrapper\">    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Prince Stones\" class=\"\" width=\"1020\" height=\"573\" src=\"https:\/\/sketchfab.com\/models\/a7da181ed78b4c868fdfccb35a6074e1\/embed?autostart=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; xr-spatial-tracking\" allowfullscreen=\"\" mozallowfullscreen=\"true\" webkitallowfullscreen=\"true\" xr-spatial-tracking=\"true\" execution-while-out-of-viewport=\"true\" execution-while-not-rendered=\"true\" web-share=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption>Prince stones in Winsen \/ Aller<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So: what do we need?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Requirements and required equipment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The good news first: the costs are minimal, the topic is easily accessible and quickly creates a fascination for students of all ages from the 9th grade onwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What we need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Cameras - the smartphone cameras of the students are completely sufficient, any existing DSLR or system cameras are all the better<\/li><li>at least one PC with an NVIDIA graphics card<\/li><li>The software <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.capturingreality.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">RealityCapture<\/a> <\/li><li class=\"translation-block\">an account at Sketchfab.com<\/li><li>Know-how how to photograph scenes and objects<\/li><li>Know-how in dealing with the software RealityCapture<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The cameras<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cameras are of course used by the students to take photos of an object or a scene. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The higher the camera resolution, the more details the later 3D object can reflect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Modern smartphones with their 12 megapixel sensors or better are completely sufficient for our purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">PC with NVIDIA graphics card<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This may be a hurdle for some schools: we need a &quot;gaming PC&quot;. We need the Nvidia graphics card because the &quot;RealityCapture&quot; software we use requires it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The good news: we don&#039;t need the latest model. Even old cards like an NVIDIA 760 GTX will do just fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">RealityCapture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are various software for the topic of photogrammetry - we rely on the top dogs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capturingreality.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RealityCapture.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From our experience, this software not only delivers the fastest and best results - the license model also suits our project very well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We can use the PPI (pay-per-input) license model. You only pay when you export a 3D model (e.g. export to Sketchfab) and you only pay for the photos that were actually used to create the geometry of the model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">On the software's website there is a calculator for expected license cost<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If we assume the case that we took 300 photos of 12 megapixels each for an object, this model will cost us 2.25 $<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Payment can be made conveniently by paypal or credit card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sketchfab<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sketchfab.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sketchfab<\/a> is almost the InstaGram for 3D content. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3D models can be uploaded to Sketchfab, shared, commented on and even sold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One should see Sketchfab as a separate social channel that can generate further reach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So the school certainly doesn&#039;t make a mistake by creating an account here, collecting the generated 3D models here and then integrating this content into their own social media activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How should the photograph be taken?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Photogrammetry requires a slightly different view of the scene than classic - artistic - photography. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Basically you look at the object in question and analyze the geometric complexity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following applies: Areas with great geometric complexity must be photographed more frequently and from more perspectives than less complex areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also makes sense to take photos from varying distances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every point of the object should be visible in at least 3 photos from different perspectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It makes sense to first capture a whole scene or object with a few photos, and then gradually map the identified details with more photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This makes it easier for the software to later assign detailed photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The software must be able to locate each photo in the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means that a fairly high overlap between the individual images must be achieved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a rule of thumb: there should be at least 70% overlap between images and for orbits around an object there should be no more than 10 degrees between 2 photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"716\" height=\"505\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/kulturschokolade.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/2022-02-09-20_09_19-kaktus_red_-saved-to-E__Projekte_Kaktus_red_rc-RealityCapture-_2_.png?resize=716%2C505&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/kulturschokolade.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/2022-02-09-20_09_19-kaktus_red_-saved-to-E__Projekte_Kaktus_red_rc-RealityCapture-_2_.png?w=716&amp;ssl=1 716w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/kulturschokolade.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/2022-02-09-20_09_19-kaktus_red_-saved-to-E__Projekte_Kaktus_red_rc-RealityCapture-_2_.png?resize=300%2C212&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/kulturschokolade.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/2022-02-09-20_09_19-kaktus_red_-saved-to-E__Projekte_Kaktus_red_rc-RealityCapture-_2_.png?resize=18%2C12&amp;ssl=1 18w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/kulturschokolade.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/2022-02-09-20_09_19-kaktus_red_-saved-to-E__Projekte_Kaktus_red_rc-RealityCapture-_2_.png?resize=150%2C106&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 716px) 100vw, 716px\" \/><figcaption>here is an almost perfect camera distribution. 4 tight orbits with lots of photos, ie lots of coverage<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As I said, these are rules of thumb \u2013 each object needs individual consideration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">weather and light<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both shadows and glaring light are bad. The best day for outdoor photogrammetry is a windless, overcast day with soft, diffuse light that doesn't cast shadows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">wind<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Calm wind is important because the geometry of the scene to be captured must be stable during photography:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bending branches or bushes in the wind, leaves being blown around, or the like will change the scene and give bad results or make results impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is suitable?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Photogrammetry is now a very stable method. However, since it is a light-based process, there are limitations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Objects - or parts of objects - that are reflective or transparent are not suitable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One can try, but such areas are usually mapped unsatisfactorily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(Of course you can edit this afterwards in a 3D software)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">RealityCapture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">RealityCapture (or RC for short) is our tool of choice when it comes to photogrammetry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following isn&#039;t an RC tutorial - we&#039;re just going through the essential process steps quickly here. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">If you want to dive deeper, take a look at the excellent Youtube channel. There is also a Facebook Group with a very active and supportive community<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the beginning you should get an account on the homepage of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.capturingreality.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">RealityCapture<\/a> do. Similarities are sought in the images and the respective positions are determined from which the individual photos were taken. On the right side you can see the object&#039;s point cloud and the camera positions hovering above it. (In contrast to the example above, the camera positions here are quite disordered - but still good enough to cover the entire model)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Generation of the 3D model<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(Mesh model -&gt; normal detail)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next, the 3D model is generated. Ie we get a geometry that is made up of many small triangles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This step takes significantly longer than the alignment.
